...........Is "Bieber Fever"
contagious?.........
I have never watched a Justin Bieber
pre or post fameYouTube video. I have never listened to an entire Bieber song, not counting my 4 year old niece singing 'Baby'
while he is barely audible in the background. I have never seen one of his music videos. The most I knew about him before tonight was that he made me smile when he became a middle aged man in a Super Bowl commercial.
Notice I said "before tonight"? Let me tell you about what I did tonight. I braved taking my three daughters and two of my nieces to see the biography film 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never'
. Not knowing what I was in for I smartly enlisted a friend to keep me company. Luckily, all the girls have never had fan love or mania of any sort so we were free of incessant giggling and over excitement. Just five girls excited about staying up late on a school night by going to the movies. I was also dreading it due to a very full schedule to begin the next day and span about 19 hours. Let me tell you, it was worth taking all the girls to see it.
I will admit it, I was one of those people who had doubts as to how talented he was. Was it his talent, or more because of young girls thinking he's cute and many having an extreme, and almost disturbing crush on him? Also, can a teenager seriously have a biography? Is his talent truly deserving of all this "Bieber Fever
"? Well, yes and no.
The movie goes between home videos, concerts, interviews, behind the scenes of the concerts and the camera following in his off time all while building up to his sold out appearance at Madison Square Garden. Which, by the way, is a huge accomplishment for even the biggest artists in the world who have been around for many, many years. Visually the film is really great. The concerts and a few other things were recorded in 3D
and it made for an awesome "concert" experience. All of the home videos showed he has a true God given talent and has had it majority of his young life. The way that kid could hit beats is amazing. He plays at least 5 instruments and he really can sing. It isn't severely altered in the recording studio *cough* Britney Spears.
This kid is so lucky to have such a huge support system. Raised by a teenage mom and her parents who want him to be a respectful and good man. A manager, vocal coach , security guard and so many others who want him to be as much of a teenager as he can be and all seem to truly love this kid. Justin acts in a way that makes you feel that all of these people mean the world for him and that he does look to them for guidance, support and possibly most of all, protection.
You see, I believe that yes, Justin Bieber
is deserving of his career. This kid has to be just as responsible, if not more, than most adults. He cannot call in to work if he is sick. The only time that happened was due to possible damage to his vocal chords. Without those, the kid has no singing career. He has to record in the studio, rehearse all of the dances for each concert, make press appearances, do all of his school work and when he can fit in time to visit family and friends and a little bit of sleep. By the way, he did over 80 performances in one year at age 16. His performances are all real and all of them really good. This kid is living his dream and that is fantastic, but I don't know if his dream included the mania that follows him most everywhere.
I also believe that no, he is not deserving of the insanity that surrounds his life. Justin Bieber is loved and admire around the world, which is a very good thing. Without all of his fans he would not be where he is today. Obviously any amount of fame for a teenager takes away an "average" life and that is fine. It is the price you pay to be able to make a living doing what you love and fulfilling your dream. The problem is when a star can do close to none of the things a person any age can normally do. Not because people want to just say hi or to shake his hand or get an autograph everywhere he goes. But because he is chased, grabbed, pushed, shoved and basically mauled and molested by frenzied fans who are, for the majority, young girls. This is not during his concerts, it is just going outside on a regular day. It was like watching an out of control mob who was attacking him while he was trying to play. Yes, I said play. Let's not forget he is still a kid. During his concerts girls actually storm the stage, try to run past over security detail, pull cables to trying to climb up to him all while screaming and hysterically crying. It was sad and disturbing to see people behave in such a manner.

On the whole the film was very good. It gave insight into his daily life, was informative of his rise to fame, entertaining and touching. I may not be dowloading his songs to my iPod
, but I definitely see why people do. there are multiple appearances by, and songs performed with several celebrities like Usher, Snoop Dogg, Miley Cyrus, Ludacris and Jaden Smith. Justin Bieber is a very musically talented person and thank goodness he seems to be a very thankful kid. Even if you aren't a fan of his, I really think you will enjoy this film. It is a must to anyone whose kid enjoys music, and any adults who do should put it on their watch list as well.

Awesome perspective Pattie. I do wonder what the shelf life of this newest teen star will be. Some seem to expire quickly & some will go on for decades aka MJ. We all know what losing your childhood did for MJ as an adult. Like you said, I've only seen bits & pieces of this kid & really thought he was cheesy. After seeing a little more from him on the talk show circuit lately, it looks like he has real talent. Maybe since he's established himself, he can gradually begin to peal away all that manufactured bubblegum pop fluff. Interesting to see how all that will play out.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jake! It really was good and I know you would like it. It is amazing the power of the internet, hard work and fans.
ReplyDeleteCari plans on taking Jenna this week. I will catch it on DVD when I'm sure Jenna will insist on getting..lol
ReplyDeleteno pop star is deserving of their career
ReplyDeleteI made fun of Justin Bieber myself, until I took my two nieces to see the film this past weekend. Never again (and I do say "never"!). I agree with everything you have said, he seems like a sweet kid with a great deal of talent. Now I have to live with my 10-year old son and husband making fun of me for being a Bieber fan!
ReplyDeleteAs an adult it's hard to grasp. Can't get into a baby faced kid singing about his babe babe babe. But I do think he is a talented young man and I hope his fame and fortune doesn't get the better of him, and he remains sweet and true to himself. I also hope he understands and can live with the sacrifices he will have to make. I wish him the best.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great review and your perspective. I have, up until Sunday night, had no interest in his career. But now, I want to know why he's so big. I have come to find the the kid has some pipes. He sings in tune and with soul and for a 16 yo that is huge (it's huge for someone in their 20s or 30s). Is he deserving of a career? Yes. Is he a great "artist"? We'll find out in 5-10 years.
ReplyDeleteOh, and (1st) Anonymous... That is a stupid statement! Do you not think that Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and The Beatles were deserving of their careers? All or them had hits topping the "pop"ular charts and all of them were aided by the record factories.
Im sorry but i dont agree with you that he is deserving. I watched his videos on youtube and felt that he was talented until he got signed by usher. He is overly arrogant and smug in every interview he does hes made comments such as hes only 16 and bigger than the beatles. He feels completely entitled to everything when hes yet to pay his dues. I'm sorry in a years time he hasnt put in a 100th of what true musicians have put into there careers. And the Grammy's is a completely different story. everyones upset that he didnt win and i would be pissed if he did. Grammy's are for musicians that have given there all and are finalyy being recognized. Justin has been at this for less than 2 years professionally and he hasnt busted his a$$ his team has. Without Usher pimping him out Justin would be another struggling artist forced to bust hi butt to get recognition, and maybe then i'd have respect for him.
ReplyDeleteHey Pattie - Like you, I was not a Bieber fan either. I have an 11 year old daughter who is and she listens to his music all of the time. To the point that I would cringe everytime I heard that voice. I never gave the kid a chance because I just assumed he was another commercialized pop star whose stage parents had finally shoved him through a crack & sold his soul to make it. I just can't believe how WRONG I was. February 11, 2011, I caught Bieber Fever. I had promised my daughter that I would take her on the day it came out in theatres. So, like you, I too solicited a friend to which I could direct my eyerolls & negative whispers. Instead, I sat, eyes on the screen anticipating what this kid was going to do next. At one point, I actually teared up which I will be hearing about for a long time. (I am catching a lot of flack from my friends for my newfound "fever" since I & most of my friends are rockers.) The movie was so good at showing how PROUD his parents & grandparents are of him. Having children of your own, I know you have experienced that yourself. Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone & I challenge anyone that is not a fan of JB to go see this movie. I don't think anyone could walk away without a new respect for him.
ReplyDeleteI'm an actor and work very hard to get myself out there and it is extremely difficult and competition is fierce. I do not hold it against anyone if they reach a very high level in a short amount of time. Good for them. I will always be happy for someone whose dream has come to realization. Yes, his team has worked very hard to get him out there because it is their job and they make $ doing it. My agent works hard for me, that doesn't mean I don't deserve any gigs I may get. Is it really fair to hold it against someone that they didn't have to live off Ramen and perform in dive bars for 10 years? I'm happy for him that it wasn't necessary.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the comments to his "arrogant and smug" interviews I have not seen them. I have seen very few interviews he did. Just remember this, he is 16. He is still very much a kid. In interviews of any kind we have no idea the relationship or banter that went on behind the scenes that carries on into the interview. that could be his and the interviewers "bit". I do not know if that is the case, but I would be willing to overlook any "attitude" and write it off as being a regular teenager.
ReplyDeleteHe is smug and arrogant. He talks about U.S. citizens as being "evil" (in his latest interview with Rolling Stone) as to why he would never apply for U.S. citizenship. I have a real problem with a anyone from any country coming to our country for financial gains and then speaking so harshly about us as a people. Justin Bieber is an ungrateful punk!
ReplyDeleteI have read the Rolling Stone article and it is obvious he was joking. It states that he laughed as soon as he said it. He did not speak harshly of Americans at all.
ReplyDeleteI am not understanding fans extreme mania for him and his non fans meanness and negativity. He is simply a kid.
I'm a middle-aged woman who saw the movie last weekend. I was interested in learning more about this kid who has so many young girls going absolutely crazy and so many people who can't stand him. There is so much hatred and I truly cannot understand it. Loved your article Pattie--I agree with everything you said! It is just very sad to me that so many people who don't appreciate him or his music feel the need to constantly defame him. Like you, Pattie, I won't be downloading his music anytime soon but I am definitely a fan of him personally and look forward to him being around for many more years and seeing what the adult JB has to show us!
ReplyDeleteGod bless Justine Beaver. Never say Never!!
